Slight recovery in New Orleans

August brought a mixed bag of results for the port of New Orleans this year, in which Port Nola is celebrating its 125th anniversary.

‘Hurricane Ida’ was just a side problem. The shortage of containers was a permanent issue; the number of blank sailings – fourteen in the course of August – another setback. Port Nola believes it fell victim to global developments on this count, as many omissions arose on account of what was happening in the global supply chain and carriers’ ways of dealing with schedule recovery, as Port Nola vice-president and chief commercial officer Todd Rives elaborated.

Throughput in New Orleans came to almost 42,600 teu in August, a 0.3% increase over the same period last year. Almost 160,000 t of breakbulk cargo was handled (+178%) and almost 9,800 railcar switches executed – a 3.6% decrease year-on-year. (cd)
