Slight setback in ports worldwide

In December 2020, the flash estimate for its container throughput index published by the German research body Rheinisch-Westfälisches Institut für Wirtschaftsforschung (RWI - Leibniz) and the Institute of Shipping Economics and Logistics (ISL) registered a light drop in world trade and container volumes.

The level for that month was 119 points, down from the audited February figure of 121.1 points. The decline may be due to a certain slowdown in Chinese ports.

Throughput in ports of the Northern Europe range also shrank from 115.4 to 112.8 points. The index is based on data from more than 88 world container ports that are continuously monitored by the ISL. The estimate for January will be published on 26 February 2021. (cd)
