Solar energy for intermodal terminal in Birrfeld
Bertschi, a specialist for intermodal chemical logistics, is investing in solar energy for its hub in Birrfeld, Switzerland, where the group operates a central rail terminal for container handling between road and rail. The site is also home to a multi-story office building, a container workshop and a tank cleaning facility.
Total electricity consumption per year is 750,000 kWh. With the installation of solar panels on the roofs of the three buildings, 240,000 kWh of energy can now be produced annually, covering about 30% of the electricity demand. The group was able to save a further 10% of electricity with process optimisations and investments in plant renewals. (ben)
