South Africa: new terminal in Durban launched

The Newlyn Park Bayhead Rail Terminal recently opened its doors at an official ceremony attended by the country’s president Cyril Ramaphosa. The terminal was built on land leased from the national ports’ authority Transnet, and in partnership with real estate developer Newlyn.

The new hub will facilitate the efficient movement of sea, rail, and road cargo through the port of Durban, providing for the handling, storage, loading and movement of a variety of cargo types.

The ZAR 3.4 billion (EUR 0.17 billion) site consists of 640,000 sqm of warehousing, rail sidings and open storage. It can receive seven full block trains of 100 teus each per day. The terminal’s rail capacity will accelerate the shift of cargo from road to rail, the South African government said. (ben)
