Spanish fruits reach Germany within 48 hours

Shift from road to rail: For the first time in its history, fruit and vegetables dealer San Lucar is transporting its products by rail from Spain to Germany using Transfesa Logistics' refrigerated rail express service.

During an initial phase, Transfesa will be sending one container of fresh produce for San Lucar per week from Valencia (Spain) on a 48-hour journey to Cologne (Germany). This itinerary significantly reduces CO2 emissions in comparison with road haulage.

This decision indicates an important modal shift in logistics in the agri-food sector because this group is one of the largest wholesale distributors in the world. It sells about 610,000 kg of 90 varieties of fruit and vegetables every day. (ben)
