Straubing opens intermodal hub

A new terminal for combined transport has been inaugurated at Straubing-Sand port. Parliamentary state secretary Ulrich Lange (pictured 4th r.), together with political and business representatives, officially opened the facility on 30 September. The project, designed to shift freight between road and rail, received federal support of EUR 19 million, covering around 79% of eligible investment according to a press release. Operations will be run by Contargo Combitrac Straubing-Sand, a joint venture between Contargo and Sfi.

Construction was completed by regional contractor Josef Rädlinger Bauunternehmen after the building phase. Covering more than 50,000 sqm, the terminal enables container handling between road and rail, aiming to strengthen Straubing-Sand’s position in the region. Lange stressed that national freight volumes will rise significantly by 2040 and underlined the need to move cargo towards more sustainable modes such as rail and inland waterway to meet climate targets.
