Strike could cost billions per day
A US nationwide rail service interruption by a freight-rail strike could cost more than USD 2 billion per day of a shutdown, according to the latest report published by the Association of American Railroads (AAR).
The report is associated with a new labour contract with the nation's rail carriers which several unions have to agree. If negotiations remain unsettled with the unions by 16 September 2022 at 12:01 AM, the US Congress must act to prevent a service interruption, AAR said.
Failure to act could idle more than 7,000 trains daily and trigger retail product shortages, widespread manufacturing shutdowns, job losses and disruptions to hundreds of thousands of rail customers. (ben)
