Survey suggests shift to autonomy
A Tech.co survey has found that 65% of US freight professionals expect self-driving trucks to be widely used by 2050, with 42% predicting adoption by 2040.
Nearly a fifth would already choose autonomy over hiring new drivers. Long-haul highway routes, low-traffic hours and distribution centre transfers are seen as ideal use cases.
Aurora Innovation plans to introduce driverless trucks on a Texas highway. "Autonomous trucks may seem like a far-flung vision of the future, but the reality is that they're already here, with states such as Texas opening their roads to the technology", said Tech.co editor Jack Turner. As labour shortages persist and demand grows, autonomous vehicles could fill critical gaps according to Tech.co. (js)
