Swiss arms exports hit a peak

In 2022 Swiss companies exported arms worth CHF 955 million to 60 countries. This corresponds to an increase of about CHF 212 million or around 29%, compared to the previous year, according to the Swiss state secretariat for economic affairs. This means that more arms were exported from Switzerland than ever before.

The reason, however, is not the war in Ukraine, but the football World Cup, Seco explained. The five main countries buying Swiss arms were Qatar, Denmark, Germany, Saudi Arabia and the USA.

Large transactions included air defence systems for Qatar, armoured vehicles for Denmark, spare parts for air defence systems for Saudi Arabia, ammunition and components for Germany and armoured vehicles for Botswana. (ben)
