Swiss carrier to be climate neutral by 2030

SBB Cargo has been expanding its intermodal portfolio since 2012. In 2019, the Swiss railfreight company carried 118,831 containers and semi trailers with a total of 98,743 wagons on its intermodal network. This corresponds to a payload of around 1.5 million net tonnes.

With the new intermodal terminal opened in Widnau SG at the end of August this year, SBB Cargo has further increased the capacity of its domestic intermodal network, the company said.

Currently, SBB Cargo has 16 cargo handling terminals across Switzerland at its disposal, ten of which under its own management.

The company has set itself an ambitious goal: it wants to be climate neutral by 2030. Already today, its trains are fuelled to 90% with electricity produced by water power. As from 2023, they are intended to run 100% on electricity drawn from renewable energy sources. (ben)
