Swiss intermodal railfreight strategy takes a new turn

SBB Cargo is reshaping its combined transport strategy by launching the first shuttle service under its "Suisse Cargo Logistics" concept on the key North–South corridor between Dietikon (near Zurich) and Stabio (Ticino). Set to begin in 2026, the pilot will test market response and operational feasibility for long-haul intermodal freight through the Alps.

Meanwhile, eight unprofitable terminals across Switzerland—including Basel, Lugano, and Gossau—will be decommissioned. The move aims to stabilise the combined transport segment, which has struggled with double-digit million-franc deficits.

Pending the outcome of the pilot, further expansion across the East–West axis is planned, including support for infrastructure such as the trimodal terminal Gateway Basel Nord. Overall, the SBB seeks to cut annual costs by CHF 60 million by 2033. As part of this restructuring, around 65 operational jobs—mainly in loco driving, shunting and technical inspection—will be phased out by end-2025. (ah)
