Switzerland pushes ahead with modal shift

Switzerland's efforts to shift transalpine freight traffic from road to rail have made further progress over the last two years: the share of rail has risen to 74%, the highest level in 25 years, while lorry journeys have fallen to around 900,000 per year.

However, the shift target of 650,000 journeys has not been reached. The Swiss Federal Council now wants to develop additional measures to strengthen the modal shift and provide funds accordingly.

Railfreight company BLS Cargo, ro-mo operator Ralpin and the commercial vehicle association Astag welcome the government's latest decision on the modal shift. (ben)
