Tallest quay cranes in the Americas
Contecon Manzanillo (CMSA), the Mexican unit of International Container Terminal Services Inc (ICTSI) headquartered in Manila (Philippines), has enhanced its terminal with two quay cranes and four hybrid RTGs, delivered on 11 May. Standing 60 m tall, the quay cranes are the tallest in the Americas and can serve vessels up to 400 m long.
The upgrade supports CMSA’s goal of handling over 2 million teu annually and enables the simultaneous berthing of three 400 m vessels. CMSA is also building a berth for 24,000 teu megaships, with a draught of 17 m.
In 2024, CMSA moved 1.5 million teu, up 14%. CEO José Antonio Contreras sees the investment — part of a USD 300 million expansion plan through to 2026 — as key to strengthening Mexico’s trade access to Pacific routes and boosting competitiveness in Asian import volumes. (ah)
