Ten newbuilds for Canada

Fednav, a major dry bulk shipping group based in Canada, has ordered ten new ocean-going Lakers. The group signed respective agreements to build these vessels with Sumisho Marine and Oshima Shipbuilding in Japan. The first unit is expected to be delivered in mid-2023.

Fednav currently operates a fleet of about 120 bulk carriers, of which 60 are company-owned. The new Lakers represent the most efficient vessels to date for Fednav.

Their carbon emissions are 33% lower than the vessels they will replace, and their nitrogen oxide (NOx) footprint is at least 87% smaller. They will be delivered equipped with tier III engines and the capability of burning biofuels.

Fednav employs 300 office staff worldwide—195 in its Montreal headquarters—and runs commercial offices in Antwerp, Charlotte, Hamburg, Rio de Janeiro, Singapore and Tokyo. (cd)
