The gods hold their breath

In July 2022, the container throughput index published by the RWI Leibniz Institute for Economic Research and the Institute of Shipping Economics and Logistics (ISL) remained stable at 126.2 points, unchanged (seasonally adjusted) from the month before.

According to the latest flash estimate, throughput in Chinese ports, where the index decreased from 137.4 to 136.0 points, showed a moderate decline. The index for Europe’s North Range dropped further from 113 (revised) to 110.7 points. The RWI/ISL index for August 2022 will be published on 30 September 2022.

Torsten Schmidt, RWI’s head of economic research: “Global container throughput has now stabilised at a high level. Apparently, it is gradually succeeding in catching up on the trade in goods that has been held up by disruptions in supply chains. The container rates, which have fallen somewhat recently, indicate that tensions in the container trade are beginning to ease.” (sh)
