Too many transhipments for Valenciaport

Valenciaport's terminals had a mixed bag of results in August 2022. On the one hand, the port posted new declines in transhipment traffic. On the other hand, the terminals registered historic records in import containers and in solid and liquid bulk.

The Port Authority of Valencia (PAV) saw a total of 86,463 containers unloaded at the docks of Valenciaport, 21.45% more than in August 2021. The number of empty containers rose by 9.8%. Yet, total traffic declined by 5.24% and containers by 1.61%. Transit containers decreased by about 220,000 units between January and August this year compared to the same period in 2021.

This decrease in transhipment shows that the Port of Valencia is at more than 80% of its occupancy rate and in peak periods, shipping lines look for other ports in the western Mediterranean for their containers. Ro-ro traffic grew by 0.85% and accumulated 8,805,000 t.

The number of intermodal transport units (ITU) increased by 7.1%. Almost 385,000 cars were handled from Valenciaport terminals in the first eight months of the year, which represents a growth of 17.7% compared to the same period in 2021. (sh)
