Transnet and ICTSI sign 25-year partnership
Transnet and International Container Terminal Services (ICTSI) have signed a significant 25-year partnership agreement for the Durban container terminal pier 2. This partnership aligns with South Africa's economic reforms and aims to enhance operational efficiency and container supply chains. Starting 1 January 2026, ICTSI will operate Pier 2, while Transnet will hold a majority share in a new special purpose vehicle.
The collaboration is set to upgrade the terminal's capacity from 2 m to 2.8 m teu and improve operational metrics, such as gross crane moves per hour and ship working hours. These improvements will help reduce logistics costs and attract more trade volumes. Transnet's CEO, Michelle Phillips, highlighted the partnership's importance for modernising maritime infrastructure, while ICTSI's Hans-Ole Madsen expressed commitment to transforming pier 2 into a world-class terminal benefiting the region.
