Trial runs on Betuwe line

Automated freight trains have started test operations on the Betuwe line between the port of Rotterdam in Holland and the Ruhr region in Germany. Control and remote monitoring of automated trains in railfreight traffic are being tested here for the first time.

The aim of automating train operations is to achieve better utilisation of track capacity and improve transport performance by selecting the optimum speed in each case.

The project, which will run until 2025, is a joint initiative of DB Cargo, Digitale Schiene Deutschland (DSD), the German research centre DLR and the Dutch infrastructure operator ProRail. (ben)
