Trimodal terminal on Upper Rhine

A new trimodal terminal is set to open in Lauterbourg on the French Upper Rhine in June this year, providing the region between Strasbourg and Karlsruhe with an additional cargo handling capacity of 80,000 teu per annum. The terminal will also be able to tranship heavy cargo.

The operating company Lauterbourg Rhine Terminal (LRT) is composed of four players from France and Germany: Paris Terminal, Compagnie Fluviale de Transport, Port Autonome de Strasbourg and Haeger & Schmidt Logistics.

The recently upgraded facility features a waterside portal crane with a capacity of up to 29 containers per hour. Two 400 m half-train tracks are available for loading and unloading railfreight. Two new reach stackers will be used to unload and load trucks.

The terminal will be integrated into Haeger & Schmidt Logistics' existing scheduled barge and train services between the ports on the Upper Rhine and the western seaports. The Lauterbourg Rhine Terminal also has a ro-ro ramp and a heavy lift crane with a carrying capacity of 200 t for project cargo. (cd)
