Turning circle to be expanded in Hamburg

To future-proof the port of Hamburg’s container operations, the turning circle leading to the Waltershof port is being widened from 480 m to 600 m.

This will ease access for today’s and tomorrow’s containerships and enhance safety and efficiency along the Elbe. Around 90% of Hamburg’s largest containerships call at Waltershof. The project includes removing a headland north of the 'Petroleumhafen' and reclaiming land to expand quay areas.

The Hamburg Port Authority will develop the infrastructure by the mid-2030s. A lease pre-agreement with Eurogate paves the way for at least EUR 700 million in private investment.

Eurogate plans to shift operations towards automation and full electrification to increase productivity and reduce emissions. The public infrastructure remains under HPA ownership and will be leased at market rates. With a total projected cost of EUR 1.1 billion, the project awaits EU approval for state aid and will be co-financed with public funds.
