UPU wants to restore US deliveries
The Universal Postal Union (UPU) has launched a technical solution to help postal operators resume deliveries to the USA after traffic fell by more than 80% following the end of the duty-free de minimis exemption on 29 August.
The US regulations shifted responsibility for duty collection to carriers or CBP-approved parties, leading many airlines to refuse shipments and 88 postal operators to suspend all or some US services. As of 5 September, posts can access a landed-cost calculator via API to collect duties from customers at origin.
The tool is designed to restore flows of low-value goods and will be integrated into the UPU’s customs declaration system used by 176 operators worldwide. A 'delivered duty paid' module will follow, as well as systems to enable data transfer and remittance to qualified third parties. (js)
