Van Oord chooses Mukran as base port

The Dutch company Van Oord has chosen the port of Mukran on the German Baltic Sea island of Rügen as the base port for the Baltic Eagle offshore wind farm. The wind farm is currently being built by the Spanish company Iberdrola. It is scheduled to be completed in 2024.

50 connectors for Baltic Eagle, called transition pieces (TPs), will be stored at Mukran Port: they are 15 m long, 7 m wide and weigh 240 t. At Mukran Port, the TPs will be further prepared for installation by fitting in additional equipment and materials.

The modern Berth 10 of the port's Offshore Terminal North will be used for the work. The berth, which has a quay area as well as a heavy-duty slab, will allow specialised vessels to call.

Thanks to this cooperation, Germany's easternmost deep-water and multifunctional port is "an important part of the European energy turnaround," says Harm Sievers, managing director of Mukran Port. (lh)
