Virtual coupling for Siberian Railways

Russian Railways (RZD) plans to operate up to five freight trains in virtual coupling mode in 2022. The plans include driving engines using virtual coupling technology with up to five consecutive freight trains. Virtual coupling is one of the innovative technologies for regulating the interval between trains. It allows to reduce the gap between following trains from 12 to 6-8 minutes.

To date, about 360 locomotives have been equipped with an intelligent system on the Karymskaya – Smolyaninovo section in Russia’s Eastern region. RZD is considering using this technology on sections of the Sverdlovsk and West Siberian Railways. (ben)
