VW and MAN advance zero-emission transport
At a Munich event, Volkswagen group logistics and MAN Truck & Bus showcased progress in transitioning to sustainable, zero-emission road freight. Simon Motter (pictured right), head of Volkswagen group logistics, emphasised that electric trucks are vital for decarbonising land transport, and over 1,000 MAN eTrucks have now been ordered. MAN's modular battery system covers over 80% of truck applications, including distribution and long-distance routes, with vehicles proven reliable in daily European operations. The event highlighted the importance of faster permitting and expanding power grids to support EV rollout.
Nanno Janssen, with 35 electric trucks, confirmed long-distance transport is feasible today, underlining the importance of scaling up. Both companies called for collaboration among logistics providers, infrastructure operators and policymakers to accelerate uptake. With government toll exemptions until 2031 and support programmes, they aim to make electric freight solutions affordable and practical, fostering a climate-friendly, efficient logistics industry across Europe.
