Wärtsilä consortium to design modular LNG carrier

The technology group Wärtsilä has lined up a collaborative effort with ABS, a firm that applies multi-physics modelling and simulation at sea, and Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding (HZS), to develop a concept for a modular LNG carrier (LNGC) that will meet IMO 2050 decarbonisation objectives. The aim is to design a multi-fuel electric vessel with flexible power supply modes that reduces CO2 emissions.

Wärtsilä’s will work with ABS’s global simulation and sustainability centres in Singapore, Houston and Athens and HZS’ LNGC design team in Shanghai to assess the performance in the context of the IMO’s carbon intensity indicator (CII).

They will use advanced multi-physics modelling and simulation and apply decarbonisation technologies to design the vessel, which will also be able to integrate new technologies in future and thus stay ahead of CII requirements.

Stefan Nysjö, Wärtsilä marine power’s vice-president for power supply, is convinced that “planning for future-proof vessels has to start now.” Wärtsilä marine power offers its customers a portfolio of engines, propulsion systems, hybrid technologies and integrated powertrain systems.
