Work in progress on the Avon – Kwinana gold rail line

Construction works on the important interstate freight rail line between Avon und Kwinana in Western Australia are expected to be completed by the end of October, according to Australia’s transport infrastructure manager ARC infrastructure.

The dual gauge railway forms the western part of the Eastern Goldfields Railway connecting Perth with the Eastern Goldfields at Coolgardie and Kalgoorlie. The AUD 16.3 million (EUR 10.06 million) Avon to Kwinana track upgrade project involves the replacement of existing plain carbon 47 kg and 60 kg rail with head hardened 50 kg and 60 kg rail respectively, along with 1,800 sleeper replacements.

The valley is a challenging area in which to work. Due to the local terrain it is only one of a handful of places on the network with dual tracks. (ben)
