World container flows on hold

The container throughput index of the German RWI – Leibniz institute for economic research and the institute of shipping economics and logistics (ISL) hardly moved at all from April to May, falling from (corrected) 107.8 to 107.7 points. The index is therefore 7.3% below the value of the previous year.

Again, developments in China differed from the rest of the world: in the Chinese ports, throughput rose by roughly 2% compared to the previous month. In the ports of the other countries throughput was 1.5% down from April and now is 90% lower than a year ago.

The northern range index, which is an indicator for economic development in northern Europe, has fallen by 2.0 points to 102.4.

The current flash estimate for the container throughput index is based on data from 61 ports which handle around 84% of the throughput described in the index. The RWI/ISL container throughput index for June 2020 will be published on 31 July 2020. (mw)
