World's greenest boxship calls Jeddah
The United Arab Shipping Company (UASC) and the Red Sea Gateway Terminal (RSGT) in Jeddah (Saudi Arabia) recently celebrated a call from "Al Nefud", the 400 m long 18,000 teu containership with a 16 m draft. The event was attended by Nabeel Al-Amudi, president of the Saudi ports authority and UASC chairman, Waleed Al Dawood, UASC’s COO, and Mohammed Al-Mudarres, CEO of Saudi Industrial Services Company (Sisco), along with other dignitaries.
UASC vessels made 300 calls and conveyed 1.23 million teu on board its own vessels to/from different Saudi ports in 2015. UASC has taken delivery of six 18,800 teu vessels – the “Barzan, Al Muraykh, Al Nefud, Al Zubara, Al Dahna” and the “Tihama”. When putting these vessels to the test, the “Al Muraykh” recently took on a record breaking load of 18,601 teu. The CO2 output per teu on that journey would be more than 60% lower than if the same containers were transported by a 13,500 teu ship. www.uasc.net
