World's largest battery-driven bulk carrier goes solar

Berge Rederi has contracted Wattlab to equip the coaster BRF Froan with 96 solar flatracks, generating 172.8 kWp – twice Wattlab's previous project – to power the world's largest battery-powered bulk carrier. The system will be installed in Flushing, Netherlands, during a single-day operation in 2026, with production commencing at Wattlab's Rotterdam facility.

The vessel, set to be delivered in Q2 2026, will transport marble in Norway, featuring rotor sails that save 339 kW per voyage, and a 23.5 MWh battery charged at ports in Brønnøy and Elnesvagen, which will also have shore power. Wattlab's technology is tailored for maritime needs, with quick, flexible installation and minimal crew effort, positioning the BRF Froan as a pioneering zero-emission vessel with cargo handling equipment and renewable energy integration.
