World trade on its way up again

In May 2022, the container throughput index published by the RWI Leibniz Institute for Economic Research and the Institute of Shipping Economics and Logistics (ISL) soared to 123.6 points from 122.1 points (seasonally adjusted) the month before, according to the latest flash estimate.

The upswing can be attributed to the Chinese ports, where the index grew from 130.6 to 133.8 points. The index for Europe’s North Range rose from 109.7 (revised) to 111.5 points. The RWI/ISL index for June 2022 will be published on 29 July 2022.

Torsten Schmidt, RWI’s head of economic research, commented: “The supply bottlenecks continue to have their impact. The developing countries were especially affected and saw a decline in container throughput. In the Chinese ports, on the other hand, trade has recovered.” (sh)
