Yes to stricter CO2 targets for HDVs

The EU parliament adopted new rules to reduce pollution from heavy-duty vehicles (HDVs) on Wednesday, 10 April 2024. The regulation addresses emissions from new trucks, buses, and trailers.

CO2 emissions from large HDVs must be reduced by 45% for the period 2030-2034, by 65% for 2035-2039 and by 90% as of 2040. The parliament also set emissions reduction targets for trailers (7.5%) and semi-trailers (10%), starting from 2030.

The law requires the commission to conduct a detailed review of the effectiveness and impact of the new rules by 2027 and the council still has to formally approve the agreement before it can enter into force. HDVs are responsible for more than 25% of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from road haulage in the EU. (ben)
