Sometimes it’s easier to find out the industry’s mood on your own doorstep than at a high-profile yet distant conference. At a new year event put on by Spedlogswiss, the Swiss forwarders’ association, president Thomas de Courten and managing director Thomas Schwarzenbach were positive when taking stock of 2018. The sometime low water level in the Rhine was one of the problems – and yet the number of customs clearances issued for exports from the country rose from 28 to 38 million between 2010 and 2017. Though the new year may throw up some questions, there is also plenty of cause to tackle it courageously.

We certainly intend to continue to do so here at the ITJ, operating as we do from Switzerland, with its multifarious international networks. One good opportunity at the start of the year is presented by SSC’s Air Freight Conference, which is being held on 31 January and 1 February. The latest developments, encapsulated by the motto ‘pack, ship, track – air freight between emissions and efficiency’, will be analysed in Interlaken.

Will we meet up there?
